PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the summer 2009 Study of the United States Institutes for Student Leaders. The program is an intensive 5 weeks academic course starting July 2009. The purpose of the program is to provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States’ society, culture, values and institutions while simultaneously enhancing their leadership and collective problem solving skills. In this context, the institute will incorporate a focus on contemporary American life, as it is shaped by historical and/or current political, social, and economic issues and debates. The institute will include an academic residency component of approximately four weeks and a domestic travel component of approximately one week that will conclude with a 2 to 3 day program in Washington, DC.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: ·

Candidate should be a first through third year undergraduate student typically 25 years of age or younger
Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in home university and community activities
· Indicate a serious interest in learning about the United States.
High level of academic achievement, as indicated in grades, awards and teacher recommendations.
Little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of home country.
Mature, responsible, independent, confident, open-minded, tolerant, thoughtful and inquisitive.
Willing and able to fully participate in an intensive academic program, community service, and educational travel program.
Good knowledge of written and spoken English.
Committed to returning to their home universities following completion of their institute program

Generally, participants should be comfortable with campus life, prepared to share living accommodations, and able to make adjustments to cultural and social practices different from those of their home country.

2. A complete Nomination Form along with 2 recommendation letters emphasizing the impact of the participation of the nominee on the development of the study of the U.S. at her/his home institution;
3. Short C.V. or résumé, if available;
4. Copy of the data/photo pages of your passport;
Official transcripts (translated) for years of university study.
The deadline for receiving complete applications is February 8, 2009, 4:30PM
